About Us

SafeWay Driving's Schertz location serves teens and adults across Schertz, Cibolo, Universal City, Selma, and the broader Randolph AFB / Joint Base San Antonio area. The school is owned and operated by Bryan Nugent, a long-time Schertz resident, and is licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and regulation under TDLR #C3638. Behind the wheel lessons meet in the Lowe's parking lot at 17280 I-35 North (behind Mama Margies), with drives delivered seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. for Samuel Clemens, Steele, and Byron Nelson High School students plus military families stationed at Randolph.

Teen Drivers Ed for SCUCISD Students

The Schertz location offers five Texas-approved teen driver education packages ranging from the State Minimum (7 hours of driving, $599) up to SafeWay Advanced Pro (37 hours of driving, $2,899), which includes the DPS-authorized road test and fulfills every parent-taught driving requirement. Most students at Samuel Clemens High School and Byron P. Steele II High School enroll in SafeWay Advanced or Advanced Plus (17–27 hours behind the wheel), which exceed the 7-hour national standard required for a Texas license. Lessons cover real local driving — I-35 merges at FM 3009, the Schertz Parkway commercial corridor, Loop 1604 entrances, and school-zone routes near the SCUCISD elementaries — so teens learn the roads they'll actually drive.

Adult Driving Lessons & First-Time License

Adults 18 and older can complete required Texas drivers ed online for $39 and add private behind-the-wheel training in 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10-hour packages, starting at $245 for 2 hours of in-car instruction. This is the most common option for active-duty Randolph AFB personnel who need a Texas license, military spouses transferring from out of state, and adults who never completed drivers ed. Private adult lessons can also be booked without the online classroom — useful for experienced drivers preparing for the DPS road test, refresher training before insurance reinstatement, or building confidence on Texas highways.

DPS Road Tests & Transfer Packages

SafeWay Schertz is authorized by the Texas Department of Public Safety to administer the official road test on-site, which means students do not have to wait for an appointment at a DPS office in San Antonio or New Braunfels. The Advanced Pro package includes the $169 road test fee at no additional cost. Students who started drivers ed at another Texas school can finish at the Schertz location through SafeWay's transfer packages — the school handles all paperwork to credit hours from the previous provider.

Why Schertz Families Choose SafeWay

SafeWay Driving has trained Texas drivers for over 50 years and is one of the few major Texas driving schools with a locally owned Schertz operation run by a resident. The meet-up location sits directly off I-35 at exit 175, putting it within a 10-minute drive of most addresses in Cibolo, Universal City, and Selma, and roughly 15 minutes from the Randolph AFB main gate. Cars are dual-brake equipped, drives are delivered every day of the week, and every instructor holds an active Texas TDLR certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do driving lessons cost in Texas?

At SafeWay Driving Schertz, teen drivers ed packages range from $599 for the State Minimum (7 hours of driving) to $2,899 for SafeWay Advanced Pro (37 hours plus the DPS road test). Adult drivers ed starts at $39 for the online classroom, and private adult lessons begin at $219 for 2 hours of in-car training.

How much is drivers ed in San Antonio, Texas?

Drivers ed prices in the San Antonio metro range from roughly $400 to $3,000 depending on whether the package is online-only, includes behind-the-wheel hours, or bundles the DPS road test. SafeWay Driving Schertz offers five teen packages from $599 to $2,899 and adult drivers ed starting at $39 online or $219 for 2 hours of in-car training.

How long does drivers ed take in Texas?

Texas requires teens to complete 24 hours of classroom instruction, at least 14 hours of behind-the-wheel training (7 hours driving, 7 hours observation), and 30 hours of supervised driving with a parent. At SafeWay Schertz, most students finish in 3–6 months depending on how many drives per week they book.

At what age can you start drivers ed in Texas

Texas law allows students to begin drivers ed at age 14, but a Texas learner permit cannot be issued until age 15. Most SCUCISD students at SafeWay Schertz enroll the summer before 9th or 10th grade so they're eligible for the permit test as soon as they turn 15.
